Tramway plans in the Stockholm region

Inauguration of the Spårväg City extension

The Stockholm region has several tramway plans in progress or under debate.

The extension of the fast tram system Tvärbanan is under construction. The extension to Solna and Sickla were finished in 2014 and 2017 respectively, and the extension to Kista is in progress and is expected to open in stages to Ursvik (2021) and to Helenelund railway station (2023).

Spårväg City was extended to the Stockholm Central station in 2018, resulting in a large increase in total passengers. The extension to Ropsten and connection to Lidingöbanan is still being discussed and financing options are explored. However, the prerequisites for the extension in form of a large depot and a double tracked bridge is already built or being built.

In the southern suburbs of Stockholm a brand new fast tramway is planned between Flemingsberg and Älvsjö, called Spårväg Syd. The tramway has received funding for construction, and the construction process will start in 2020. The system is expected to be completed in 2030. In the long run, there are plans to extend the system to Tvärbanan in Älvsjö. There are also ideas about using metro tracks that will be abandoned after the new metro system is constructed, to connect it to Tvärbanan at Gullmarsplan, hence creating a larger network. However, these ideas neither have funding or political decisions behind them yet.

There are other future visions regarding tramways in Stockholm too, such as converting trunk bus line 4 to tramway to decrease congestion and bus platooning. However, this project has not yet received funding nor necessary political traction.
